Sedation Dentistry
Anxiety-Free Dental Procedure for Happy Teeth
What is Sedation Dentistry/Sleep Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry involves procedures during the dental appointments, which helps relax the patient and reduce their anxiety for having a more pleasant dental experience. It also prevents them from moving excessively during their dental appointment and reduces their gag reflex. Patients will forget their dental appointment after recovery.
Do I Need Sedation Dentistry?
Not all dental patients need this form of treatment, so you can always get in touch with us in Vancouver to find out if it applies to you. Generally, we recommend this type of dentistry for :
- The patients with low pain tolerance.
- The patients who have difficulty staying still.
- The procedures that take longer than the usual time for completion.
- The patients with sensitive teeth or gums.
- The patients who have gag reflex.
- The children who are not cooperative for a dental treatment.
We always take the patient’s medical history into consideration before assigning any procedure or treatment.
Types of Dental Sedation
Methods Available
Our dental office offers three dental sedation methods for all patients:
One of the sedation techniques we offer to help reducing patients’ anxiety and making them feel more relaxed is “Oral sedation”. We require patients opting for this type of sedation to fast for 6 hours prior to their appointment. Morning appointments are strongly recommended and patients need to arrive an hour before their dental appointments.
With Oral sedation, patients feel relaxed, incoherent or fall asleep. They would also forget their dental appointment after they are fully recovered and they need assistance when heading back home. However, they would be conscious during the appointment, it is also called ” conscious sedation” .
This type of sedation is usually recommended for wisdom teeth surgery, dental implants or any other types of surgery, root canal therapy or all types of dental procedures when patients have phobia of a dental appointment.
More commonly known as “laughing gas” sedation, this method uses the laughing gas to encourage relaxation. With this method, patients would be relaxed during the appointment and recovery is very fast, within a few minutes. So they do not need additional support and can drive home after the appointment.
We require patients opting for this method to fast for 4 hours prior to their dental appointment. Morning appointments are also recommended to make it easier to follow the pre-sedation instructions for the patients.
This type of sedation is usually recommended for children’s dental appointment and also a good option for wisdom teeth surgery or any other type of surgery.
In this method, we combine the Oral sedative medication with Nitrous oxide to relax the patients to a higher level.
We require patients opting for this type of sedation, to fast for 6 hours prior to their appointment. Morning appointments are strongly recommended and patients need to arrive an hour before their dental appointments.
With combination sedation, patients feel incoherent or fall asleep. They would also forget their dental appointment after they are fully recovered and they need assistance when heading back home.
This type of sedation is usually recommended for children’s dental appointment and also a good option for wisdom teeth surgery, dental implants or any other type of surgery.
Is Sedation Dentistry Safe for Dental Treatments?
Yes, sedation dentistry is safe because it involves a level of sedation which is less potent than general anaesthesia. We also monitor your vitals and take your medical information into account before moving forward with the procedure to eliminate the chances of a negative reaction.
